A dental bridge is a dental restoration designed to literally “bridge” the gap left by a missing tooth. A bridge consists of a pontic (false tooth) and two dental crowns. The dental crowns fit over the teeth on either side of the gap, anchoring the bridge in place to restore your smile.
Teeth that are missing need support. Otherwise, they will gradually start to shift and move into the open space. A bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge may be recommended by your dentist for a number of reasons.
There are three parts to a dental bridge. Two of those parts are dental crowns, and one of those is an artificial tooth. Each part is made in a dental lab based on your dentist’s instructions.
The two dental crowns are called abutments. The artificial tooth is referred to as a pontic. The abutments attach to healthy teeth on either side of the space where the bridge will be attached. The pontic is suspended between the abutments.
The dentist first prepares the teeth that will receive the abutments. This involves removing a portion of the tooth structure to make room for the dental crown. Impressions are then taken of the teeth and sent to a dental lab, where the permanent bridge will be made.
If you want to improve the longevity of your dental bridges, be sure to practice good oral hygiene. Brush and floss daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It’s also important to visit your dentist twice a year for checkups.
Dental bridges cost will vary widely. The cost for a dental bridge depends on several factors, including the dentist, the location of the dentist, the materials being used, and any additional procedures that may be needed.
