Crowns in Glen Cove, NY

A dental crown is a cap used to cover a tooth. It’s sometimes referred to as a “cap” and is used to restore a tooth’s function and appearance. A dental crown is commonly used to cover a tooth that has broken, has a large cavity, or is severely worn down. The crown, made of porcelain, metal, or resin, is designed to fit over the remaining portion of the tooth.

When is a dental crown recommended?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. When a tooth has been damaged by a cavity or fracture, for instance, a dental crown is used to restore the tooth and prevent further damage. Dental crowns are also recommended when restoring a dental implant, but they can also be used as an alternative to a dental bridge.

Types of dental crowns explained

There are different types of dental crowns to choose from. These include:

  • Full porcelain crowns
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
  • All-metal crowns

During your consultation, we will recommend which type of dental crown is best for you.

Ceramic or porcelain crowns

Ceramic and porcelain dental crowns look very natural and closely match the appearance of your natural teeth. They can be made to look very life-like, so they are often a good choice for patients who need crowns on the front teeth. All-ceramic crowns are tooth-colored and are often used to restore a visible portion of a tooth that has been damaged. They also work well for protecting a tooth from further damage.

Gold crowns

Gold crowns (also known as 24-karat gold crowns) are very strong and resistant to corrosion. Gold crowns look very natural and are generally preferred by patients who are looking for the most natural-looking crown. Gold crowns are also suitable for the smile line.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns aren’t as common as all-ceramic or gold crowns, but they’re still an option. These crowns are composed of a metal frame covered with porcelain. Porcelain is the material we most often use to make natural-looking dental crowns.

Stainless steel crowns

Stainless steel crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed over a tooth to protect it from further damage or to improve its appearance. These crowns are silver in color and very durable. They are often used on molars. After the tooth is prepared, the crown is placed and secured to the tooth using dental cement.

How are crowns placed?

To prepare for a crown, the dentist will remove the damaged portion of the tooth, leaving only the healthy portion. An impression is then taken, and a temporary crown is put in place until a permanent crown can be made. The impression is sent to a dental lab, where the crown is made. The permanent crown is made from a strong composite resin material that matches the natural color of your teeth.

Once the permanent crown is ready, you’ll come back to the dentist’s office to have it placed. The dentist will clean and disinfect the tooth and then place the permanent crown. Our dentist will place the crown on your tooth and match it with your bite and smile. It will then be polished to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
