Periodontal Treatments in Glen Cove, NY

Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that develops mainly from the oral bacteria deposited on the teeth. It initially starts as gingivitis, which is the minor inflammation of the gum tissues. When left untreated, the symptoms can worsen drastically and affect your day-to-day activities.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing are non-surgical procedures used to clean the tooth’s root surface and remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Scaling and root planing are sometimes recommended due to gum inflammation, known as gingivitis. This condition is caused by plaque and tartar
buildup on the teeth.

Pocket reduction surgery

Pocket reduction surgery is a specific type of periodontal surgery that is used to treat mild or moderate forms of gum disease. During this procedure, the gum tissue is reshaped to expose more of the tooth surface. This allows more of the tooth to be cleaned and cared for.

Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy is a type of periodontal treatment that removes or reduces the gingiva (gums). The gum line may be altered or uneven, and gingivectomy can be used to correct the gum line. Another treatment we perform is flap surgery.

During flap surgery, the periodontist folds back the gums and removes tartar deposits on the tooth root surfaces. Root planing is usually performed before flap surgery.

Bone grafts

A bone graft is a treatment used to repair and replace missing bone in the jaw. There are several reasons someone may need a bone graft. For example, if a tooth has been missing for an extended period of time, the bone in the jaw can deteriorate. A bone graft replaces this lost bone and restores the structure of the jaw.

Sinus lifts

A sinus lift corrects a recessed gum line. This occurs when the jawbone recedes, often as a result of tooth loss or periodontal disease. A sinus lift restores the natural contours of the gums and jaw.

During a sinus lift, an incision is made in the gum tissue. This provides access to the bone and tissue that overlay the roots of the upper teeth. The tissue is reshaped, and the bone is adjusted to an ideal height. Then, the gum tissue is repositioned over the bone and sutured in place. A sinus lift is often performed along with other procedures, such as placing dental implants or preparing teeth for dentures.

Soft tissue grafts

Soft tissue grafts, also known as gum grafts, are used to restore gum tissue lost to periodontal disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), injury, or other problems. Gum grafts can cover exposed roots or develop gum tissue where absent. Soft tissue grafts are most often performed to improve the appearance of the smile.
